Towbars can be complicated, especially if you haven’t used one before. Luckily for you, Somerset Mobile Towbars understands the importance of towbars and has years of experience fitting, repairing and servicing towbars. Today, we want to share all that experience with you.
This blog post will walk you through the process of connecting another vehicle to your towbar, as well as what you need to know when you are on the road and few tips to keep in mind when connecting a car using your towbar.
How To Connect
Before you connect a car using your towbar, make sure the towbar is fitted to your vehicle correctly. Once you have checked the reliability of your towbar, drive the car that you wish to tow into the positive behind the other vehicle.
Next, you will need to hook the two arms of the towbar to the baseplate of the towed vehicle, and then you will attach the coupler over the ball and into the vehicle in front.
Make sure any safety cables, chain or straps are correctly attached, and that you have the keys to start the ignition of the car you are towing.
When On The Road
Make sure to pull away from your current stationery position slowly, and never go past 15mph. You should try to pre-plan your journey to make sure you know what route you are taking. While on the road, make sure you are periodically checking your mirrors to verify that everything is where it should be.
Additional Safety Tips
When towing, both vehicles need to have their lights on in the dark, or when the weather is poor. This will enable other drivers to see both vehicles and drive accordingly.
Before towing, make sure the towed vehicle is in neutral to allow the wheels to turn freely otherwise you could cause severe damage to the engine of the vehicle.
